Black Spreadwing

Lestes stultus

Summary 2

Spreadwings hold their wings at about 45 degrees to the body when resting. This distinguishes them from most other species of damselflies which hold the wings along, and parallel to, the body when at rest. Black Spreadwing can be found at ponds, small marshy lakes, and slow streams with abundant vegetation. It flies as early as March in the Bay Area, but is uncommon to rare in San Mateo County.
