Greek Stream Frog

Rana graeca

Description 2

It is a medium-sized, rather clumsy brown frog with a short, rounded snout. The head-trunk length of adult animals is a maximum of seven to eight centimeters. In the so-called heel test - a hind leg is folded along the trunk forward - the heel joint protrudes slightly above the head (in the case of the common frog the hind legs are shorter, the heel joint does not extend to the tip of the snout). Other differentiation features to other brown frogs arise for specialists from various biometric quotients, such as the distance between the nostrils and each other and the eyes, from the nostril distance to the eye diameter or from the length of the heel bumpin relation to the first toe. The basic color of the top ranges from brownish, reddish-brown, yellowish, over olive to gray; Often there is a dark spot. In addition to monochrome specimens, those with bright "mold spots" can also be observed (this characteristic also occurs in other southern European brown frog species). The throat is dyed dark gray and has a bright centerline (see also: Italian jumping frog ). The abdominal skin is whitish.

The eardrum inside the temple spot is occasionally unclear and reaches a diameter equal to 3/5 of the eye diameter. The pupils are horizontally-elliptically shaped. The gland slats that pull laterally over the back are relatively far apart at the height of the shoulders (in contrast to the common frog).

The males are recognizable among other things by stronger forelegs. In addition, they form a lead to black-gray "wedding color " at the mating season, appear "wobbly" as a result of accumulations of lymphatic fluid under the skin, and the heat calluses on the fingers are then pigmented black-brown. They have internal sound bubbles to make the mating calls.

Apart from the nominate form , the Italian frog ( Rana italica ) found on the Apennine Peninsula was temporarily regarded as a subspecies . Meanwhile, however, this is managed as a separate species.
