Wine-plumed Spiny Dorid

Acanthodoris nanaimoensis O'Donoghue, 1921

Description 2

Dorsum greyish-white to dirty brownish-mauve in larger specimens, with numerous large, pointed, yellow tipped conical tubercles, with yellow band around margin of dorsum. Rhinophores long with about 22-30 lamellae, tipped with deep wine-red to maroon. Branchial plumes 7-9, bipinnate, greyish-white, usually tipped with deep wine-red to maroon. Labial tentacles large and auriculate, extending nearly to edge of dorsum.

Size 2

Typically about 25mm in length, but may reach 35mm.

Geographic Range 2

Baranof Island, AK, to Santa Barbara, CA. iNaturalist has one observation farther north at Waterfall Beach, AK.

Notes 2

May emit odor of cedar or sandalwood when handled. Jeff Goddard reports that it preys on the bryozoan Alcyonidium polyoum.
