Rabbit Dorid

Crimora coneja Marcus, 1961

Description 2

Ground color translucent greyish-white. Dorsum and dorsal surface of tail bear numerous rather long processes of various sizes which may be simple, bifid, or slightly branched distally, and are dark brown to black distally and many bear orange just below the brown to black. Frontal margin slightly expanded into a veil-like process which bears about 10 processes which are slightly branched distally, and about 10 shorter processes which are very slightly or not at all branched distally; both sets of processes are orange distally and some bear dark brown to black distally. Rhinophores bear about 9-12 lamellae, clavus orange, shaft translucent greyish-white. Branchial plumes tripinnate, translucent greyish-white. The dark brown to black tipped dorsal processes and lack of orange on the branchial plumes distinguish this species from the much more common Triopha catalinae.

Size 2

Up to about 23mm in length.

Geographic Range 2

Pt. Loma, San Diego Co., CA to Cape Arago, OR.

Notes 2

Found in the low, rocky intertidal and subtidal. Goddard (1984:148) reports that it preys on the bryozoan Hincksina minuscula. Very rare; although Monterey Bay is within the reported geographic range of this species, it has not yet been reported from Monterey Bay.
