Downy Woodpecker

Dryobates pubescens

Summary 4

The downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is a species of woodpecker, the smallest in North America. The total length of an adult ranges from 5.5 to 7.1 inches. Males have a red patch on the back of the head whereas females are entirely black and white. The downy's plumage is nearly identical to the larger hairy woodpecker, except for the downy's black spots on its white tail feathers. The downy's bill is also shorter than its head, whereas the hairy's is approximately equal to its head in length. It can be spotted year-round in the COSA
