Nuttall's Woodpecker

Dryobates nuttallii

Summary 6

Nuttall's woodpecker (Dryobates nuttallii) is a species of woodpecker named after naturalist Thomas Nuttall in 1843. They are found in oak woodlands of California and are similar to the ladder-backed woodpecker in both genetics and appearance. It is slightly larger than a Downy Woodpecked and smaller than a Hairy Woodpecker. Adult males have a red crown while females do not, but juveniles of both sex have red on the head. The horizontal stripes across its back set it apart from Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. It can be spotted in the COSA year round.
