Arctic Shrew

Sorex arcticus

Summary 2

This is a rare species extremely sensitive to human disturbance. In late summer and winter the back is much darker than the rest of the animal's body and makes for an easy ID, however in other seasons this goes away and makes it essentially unidentifiable (Sorex species are very difficult to identify without close examination of the teeth).

Range 3

Statewide except for southwestern part of the state. Always found away from people.

Habitat 3

Open wet habitats, especially bogs and sedge meadows.

Size 3

4-5", tail 1-1.75"
