Common Green Darner

Anax junius

Summary 6

The green darner or common green darner (Anax junius), after its resemblance to a darning-needle, is a species of dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae. One of the most common and abundant species throughout North America, it also ranges south to Panama. It is well known for its great migration distance from the northern United States south into Texas and Mexico. It also occurs in the Caribbean, Tahiti, and Asia from Japan to mainland China.

Habitat 7

Adults are found primarily in riparian habitats along watersheds. This is most likely because the adult either emerge from the water or they are going to lay their eggs there. However, they are also found in a range of habitats like forests, grasslands, and even deserts though nearby water is necessary. Nymphs are always found in water, usually in shallow locations along the water rim of 0.5 m depth.

Migration 7

Some populations will migrate thousands of kilometers, especially along coastlines. Other populations are residential, so they remain in the same location as they emerge. Populations that migrate northward will typically lay their eggs before northern resident populations.
