Auricular semets in Alces and Odocoileus, but not other odocoileine deer

In https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/milewski/55532-previously-overlooked-facial-expressions-in-the-wapiti#, I showed that a typical species of cervine deer possesses auricular semets, particularly in juveniles and adult females in summer coat.

This finding is all the more intriguing because, in other respects, the sexes hardly differ in colouration in the wapiti (Cervus canadensis).

Since we now have a search-image for these small-scale but significant patterns, the question arises: how do the two main clades of deer differ in the incidence of auricular semets?

The two main subfamilies are Cervinae and Odocoileinae, the former associated mainly with Eurasia and the latter associated mainly with the Americas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capreolinae). The geographical split is blurred by

  • the occurrence of Capreolus in Eurasia, and
  • the sharing of Alces, Rangifer and C. canadensis between Eurasia and North America.

What I show in this Post is that odocoileine deer in general lack auricular semets, the main exceptions being

In the moose, the pattern differs from that in e.g. the wapiti. This is because it is

  • restricted to the anterior base of the ear pinna,
  • present in adult males as well as females, and
  • absent from infants.

Please see the following photos, bearing in mind that an auricular semet is a dark-edged, pale mark near the anterior and/or posterior base of the ear pinna, which seems to accentuate the movements of the ear (e.g. Cervus https://www.shutterstock.com/nb/image-photo/noble-deer-on-reindeer-farm-young-1867754611) for the purposes of social communication.

All these photos show females, excluding winter pelage.

In Odocoileus, auricular semets are faintly present in at least some individuals/species/subspecies. This includes the posterior position.

However, auricular semets are absent in Rangifer, Capreolus, Blastocerus (except for a faint version in the posterior position), Ozotoceros, Hippocamelus, Pudu, and Mazama, as follows.
