Yellow Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum)Observer
ab_orchidDescription
I posted these two photographs with my fieldbook in front to show their size: about 3-4 cm across. Yet, these are technically var. pubescens (i.e., "large" Yellow Lady's Slippers). This illustrates a point that I have made many times: pure size (of any floral part) is a weak discriminator in C. parviflorum.
I think these (and many nearby) are small this year because of the hot dry growing season thus far.
This is one of the reasons that I usually post my observations as simply "parviflorum". My identifications of others also reflect this.

Eastern Fairy-Slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. americana)Observer
ab_orchidDescription
1 group of Calypso, almost past. In the group were 6 hybrids, right beside 8 'regular' var. americana.
I left the location open because there is not much chance of these being trampled.
Another interesting note: I've never seen Calypso growing in dense grass like this. Interesting.
