Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni)

Observer

Date

Description

Need an ID for this hawk I was unable to snap a photo of. Written details are what stood out most. My best guess is some phase of Red-tail I am not yet familiar with.

Thanks for taking a look.

What

Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)

Observer

anhingas

Date

December 7, 2023 05:25 PM EST

Description

Vocalized. I will understand this staying ungraded though. Must have been in our Umbrella Tree; I came out onto our back patio slab and as I was walking towards the bottlebrush it skimmed so close over my head I felt the wind. Unfortunately too dark out for clearer photos but it was kind enough to call for a few seconds before darting into the island and alarming the catbirds.

Observer

Description

Small population. Circle encompasses most of the area we've spotted them. I do think there's a good possibility that these could be eradicated from this location though.

BE CAREFUL WHEN PARKING IN THIS PART OF THE LOT they can and will get in the wheel wells of your car. I truly believe this is one of the major ways they are spreading out.

This cheeky little scamp kept playing dead. It's also my 1600th observation!

I'm not an insect person so corrections are appreciated. It was so freaking small and my camera's macro mode is terrible. Hopefully there's enough detail present.
