Growing in small block of woods near red oaks, and an ash tree. Remnants of yellow universal veil at base (4th and 5th photos). KOH on cap turning more yellow.
Older specimens smell reminiscent of shellfish.

Description

Growing from soil near red oak, black oak, chinkapin oak, and distant ash tree. Flesh tough/spongy and tasted somewhat bitter reminiscent of cardboard. Surfaces on cap and stem bruising brown while handling. Ammonia turning instantly brown, then slowly turning back to normal color, KOH more black and resisting color change.

Growing from/near moss under small red oaks, black oak, ironwood trees. Cap primarily gray with pinkish and greenish tones in areas. Gills are more flexible compared to traditional Russulas. Tastes minutely acrid. KOH resulting in faded light orange on cap surface.

Description

Growing near red oak, chinkapin oak, bitternut and shagbark hickory trees. Does not taste acrid. Milk watery, not staining white paper but does appear to stain gills slightly brown. Stem is hollowed in areas. No reaction to ammonia.

Taste and smell not distinctive. Base of stipe slightly fuzzy. Rhizomorphs pinkish-tan in color and fairly aggressive, holding much of nearby substrate to the base.
