Description

Critically rare. Previously recorded from two specimens from Klein River Mountains
A few plants in rock cracks on steep south facing rocky slope. Many plants of Anaxeton virgatum growing nearby and also in rock cracks but much narrower leaves and differences in inflorescence. Comparative photos of Anaxeton lundgrenii and A. virgatum included. Both species have 3 flowers per flowerhead.

Description

Growing on damp shady rock ledge. Keys out as Hippia pilosa but that species has yellow flowers and grows in vicinity on dry loose rocky slopes in full sun. Comparative plants from nearby shown in photo 3. Clear difference in female flower achenes. This species has the apex of the achenes clearly winged (compared to Hippia pilosa achene on right).
These observations probably represent the same species but would need to see achenes:

Trifolium glomeratum does not appear to have been recorded as an alien in South Africa before. Not a significant threat though, just another weedy ruderal.

Stinking Goosefoot Chenopodium vulvaria

Observer

Date

Description

Long known in South Africa as Chenopodium mucronatum but no discernible difference between the two species - both stink of rotting fish. Presumed native but could have been an early introduction. First recorded from the country by Thunberg. Aellen (1928) considers C. mucronatum distinct (see https://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/viewer/14710/?offset=#page=352) due to habit, leaf lobing and seed coat but without specifics as to how it differs from C. vulvaria. His decision appears to be based upon Murr but Murr only considers C. mucronatum in comparison to Chenopodium opulifolium - no mention is made or comparison with Chenopodium vulvaria (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/104955#page/1052/mode/1up). Both Flora Capensis (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/15244#page/453/mode/1up) and Range in Feddes Repertorium 36: 5 (1934) (https://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/viewer/14778/?offset=#page=13) consider the African plants C. vulvaria
