Red Spruce (Picea rubens)

Observer

Date

May 7, 2024 08:18 PM EDT

Description

1 of 30 red spruce,
Picea rubens,
planted
(11 planted 05/05/24),
seedlings from NYS DEC,
shipped from Saratoga Tree Nursery 04/29/24, arrived here 04/30/24.
Box says “Mix 5” , Adirondack pack, (also balsam fir, tamarack, red maple)
Morning of 05/03/24 I heeled in all seedlings into buckets with compost, watered them, put them shaded under back deck, to give us more time to plant them.

Planted in wide slit of native wet clay-y soil with some compost from Cayuga Compost ($31 /yd).

These red spruce are plugs and very easy to plant.
Used Bushpro Hi-baller spade (orange handle).

.
Note: today May 7 blue skies sunny. No expected rain today until late tonight.
59-74 F temp. 0.29” rain forecast tonight. Winds 1.
This next week with 52-76 F days, nights 41-56F, total 1.77” of rain.
