Description

A torpid crab barely able to move. I thought it might have just moulted and hardened but it could also have been the temperature or another factor. No other crabs observed over 1 km of beach but a few close burrows were seen.

The red weed is the subject of the photo. It covers the lower half metre of the river bank at low flow up to the waterline or wetting level. There is a straight below which the bank is red, almost in the way that the lower portion of a ship is coated red. At a guess, I would say that this plant is the exposed phase of an aquatic, probably a Potomogeton
