Description

I discovered this deceased bee, stuck in the flowers of a Butterflyweed. It appeared to have gotten it's tarsus stuck in the pollinarium of the milkweed and was unable to free itself. I really had to tug to free it from the blossom. Photos of the pollinia, attached to the bee, included.

Warm day, temps in the 70's, and this guy came out to forage on Mistflowers.

Ignore the Crab Spider that appears in some of the photos with the bee.

This hummer arrived at mid-morning on Dec 2, 2019. i'm not sure which species it is. I haven't seen any other hummers in six weeks. This hummer only stayed for a few sips of nectar and then was not seen again. Last photo has been lightened several shades but I think I'm seeing a reddish/orange reflection on it's gorget.

Sandhill Crane Antigone canadensis

Observer

Description

I can verify hearing their trumpeting as they passed overhead. There were about 70 cranes in this flock (I counted the dots) and they were flying directly south. Passed overhead about 5:15 PM. Oddly, the previous evening a small flock of about 2 dozen also passed overhead at the same time except that, that flock was flying directly west, into the setting sun. Maybe they were lost?

Really bad cell phone photos. My guess is that this is Melissodes sp. (based on the bands of pile on abdomen and scopae on rear legs.)
Very surprised to see one foraging this time of year. We've had several frosts already.

Very large Owl - seen at great distance but looks to be 18 - 24" tall (rules out my resident Screech Owls). I've frequently heard GHOs hooting in the trees around this location but this is the first time I've been able to get a photo of one. In Photo #1 - owl has it's back and face turned away from camera. In Photo #2 - owl's back is still to camera but it's face is towards camera. In Photo #3 - owl is launching off of the branch.
