Ascomycete Fungi (Phylum Ascomycota)Observer
ethancrensonDescription
On a dead branch of hardwood. This is some kind of hyphomycete (is it synnematous or pycnidial?). The fourth photo shows a section through one of the fruiting bodies showing conidiospores developing in a chamber embedded in the wood which travel up the neck through a rather broad channel to the apex of the neck which protrudes from the bark.
Conidiospores:
Hyaline with oil droplets, ellipsoid, smooth, aseptate
8.6-12.5 x 3.8-4.9µm
Q=2.0-3.0
N=33
Me=10.3 x 4.2µm

What
Genus ByssonectriaObserver
ethancrensonDescription
Found by Christine. Broadly ellipsoid spores. On a muddy tire rut. Growing without an apparent mycelial mat. The largest is 1.5 mm in diameter. They sometimes have a faint white marginal zone.
The apothecia are unfortunately immature. It is difficult to find many ejected spores. The spores in ascus are broadly ellipsoid, smooth and small. The few I was able to measure out of the asci were approximately 9-10 x 5-6µm.
The few asci present are IKI-. Paraphyses are enlarged at the tips and contain orange pigments which stain green in IKI.
