What

Coyote (Canis latrans)

Observer

Date

Description

The coyote was walking alongside the west side of the house, between the house and driveway.
I thought it was a fox at first, but it was definitely a coyote--not large, weighing probably 30 pounds, scrawny. It was so calm that I thought it might be sick. We looked at each other for 30 seconds, three yards apart. I called my companion over, who approached and also saw the coyote, still standing and watching us. Then the animal gingerly slunk under the hedging and appeared to go east, perhaps into the fenced backyard of the house (opening in fence there). But it disappeared very effectively. I didn't see the ear tags until it was walking/slinking away from us, from behind.
