Only one plant of this has been seen in five days of traversing this bush remnant reserve so far. Kicking myself for not taking a grid ref and removing it. By memory it was on the slope below and south of trap station A68. In an area of broken canopy with lots of sheep activity.

What

Bright Bead Cotoneaster Cotoneaster glaucophyllus

Observer

Description

Many seedlings for Cotoneaster were found in this area (trap station A64) and generally around this midnorth area of the Sandymount WL mgt reserve. I saw a couple of small trees that reached the canopy but it seemed to me that the plant was still at an early stage of invasion. Unusually it is easy to uproot seedlings at this site because they are in sand. One sapling was seen on the roadside. It would be good to assess the potential to stem this invasion as C will change the character of this forest remnant on sand. There is Rubus fruticosus also in this area.

What

European Black Elderberry Sambucus nigra

Observer

gloh

Date

November 6, 2019

Description

There are many elderberry well established in this reserve and surroundings. It is expanding especially in areas grazed by sheep (not permitted) and dominated by young mahoe. It is a significant portion of the canopy of the bush remnant, perhaps 15%. Probably unmanageable now. but it is an important coloniser of the lower bare areas, thus compromising the character of the reserve which is the only forest remnant on sand on the east coast north of the Catlins.
