Hazels (Genus Corylus)

Description

Likely C. cornuta, I’m thinking, due to its presence elsewhere on the property.

Animals (Kingdom Animalia)

Observer

Description

One set of prints about 4”; about 2” inches between prints; individual front print has claws, 4(?) toes, and is about 1.5”-2” inches; back foot is about 2” and also appears to have 4 claws and toes. Opossum is one of the top CV suggestions, but I’m not sure if there are the opposable “thumbs” you’d expect.

Not sure this is maple; branching was mostly alternate with only that one node with opposite branching.

Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis)

Just a guess, although I’ve seen more Carya ovata in this area.

What

Sweet Birch (Betula lenta)

Observer

Description

I’m thinking sweet birch, given those spiky things (I know buds are said to be spiked?) but that’s just a guess. There are many birches of different species in this area. Found in a swampy area along a brook.

Observer

Not sure this is chaga or some (other) parasite. Found on a black cherry (Prunus serotina) that still seemed to be alive.
