Winged and Once-winged Insects Subclass Pterygota

Observer

Description

A large hickory had fallen across a path in a wooded area a couple years ago and was sawn through to clear the path. Within the last week the main trunk on one side of the path (pic1 and 3rd last pic) has become covered in patches of sawdust, dozens or maybe hundreds of piles. In 3 example pairs, I show a pile of sawdust, and then the 2 mm diameter hole that is revealed underneath once I blow the dust away. The last 2 pics in the set show example logs from the same tree on the other side of the path- all so far untouched by these insects, from what I can see.

On black raspberry. This is only the second shoot observed this summer in an extensive patch so my problem is probably not severe. I scared up 1 likely adult while picking a month ago, but couldn't get a good look. A relative battling them elsewhere says they are shy and sneaky.

These are common in the woodsy areas of campus and very vocal. This is the first time I'd seen one foraging this low to the ground (along creek bank). Of course perfect poses stopped as soon as I fired up the camera- this is the best I could get.

Mystery much taller bush (above head high) next to the blueberries in the patch. Drooping fruits had a bluish blush, currently green inside. Although unripe when sampled, it was clear from the taste that they are not unripe blueberries.

Stumbled over a couple of blueberry bushes tucked into the huckleberry patch, about the same height (waist to chest high). Given these; the black raspberries, blackberries observed last year; possible Southern dewberries along ground in spots; and the mystery berry bush of accompanying obs, I should just be calling it the berry patch.
