What
Running Crab Spiders (Family Philodromidae)Observer
martinlucasDescription
A smallish spider skittering rapidly over bare sand in a sand prairie barren area. The bot suggested this rough ID, and after reading the description it seems reasonable, though this one seems more lightly built than most. For now, it's a bot-based preliminary proposal.
What
Juvenal's Duskywing (Erynnis juvenalis)Observer
martinlucasDescription
In a sand prairie/barrens. I assume this is a female.

What
Northern Black Widow (Latrodectus variolus)Observer
martinlucasDescription
With a recently captured grasshopper in a sand prairie and marsh. I'm leaning toward the variolus partly because that species has previously been found in the same area, and also because disconnected red patches are visible on some of the photos, but the two species are similar so it's tentative until an expert weighs in. It was interested observing it with a large prey catch - it was quite cautious about approaching the grasshopper, darting over and adding silks one at a time. The location of the photographs is a fairly high quality native sand prairie remnant.

What
Blue-eyed Grasses (Genus Sisyrinchium)Observer
martinlucasDescription
In a sand prairie and marsh area. S. campestre seems most likely to me, but I find these confusing.

What
Three-lined Hoplia (Hoplia trifasciata)Observer
martinlucasDescription
On Aronia melanocarpa blossoms on the edge between Bogus Run bottoms and a sandy oak woodland. The first photo was rotated 90 clockwise for easier viewing.
What
Rattlesnake Fern (Botrypus virginianus)Observer
martinlucasDescription
At the edge of a sandy oak woods, at the base of a north facing slope and the edge of an abandoned rail right-of-way.
What
Genus LasiopogonObserver
martinlucasDescription
On bare sand on the bank of Betty's Pond. A male? I've posted three images as separate observations because I doubt they are the same individuals. The (apparent male) seems to have smoky wings.
What
Genus LasiopogonObserver
martinlucasDescription
On the sunny sand shores of Betty's Pond. The pond is fishless and spring fed. I think this is a male. I've previously posted photos of females ID'd as L. Opaculus from the same site, so I wonder if this might be a male of that species. I found no photos that proved at all helpful. See also: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/212727730
What
Genus LasiopogonObserver
martinlucasDescription
On the sunny sand banks of Betty's Pond. L. Opaculus was previously ID'd from this site, so that would seem the prime suspect: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/20139002 - A female?

What
Cornsilk Flies (Genus Euxesta)Observer
martinlucasDescription
I saw a number of these little flies on sunny logs in a sandy black oak woodland/savanna. The were doing a flagging action with their wings. About 6-8mm. Photos aren't a single individual, but I feel reasonably sure they are all the same species. Note the little dark patches on the tips of the wings So far, I've made little progress on identifying these.

What
Genus AugochloraObserver
martinlucasDescription
A small, shiny, emerald green bee on Claytonia virginica in a sandy oak woodland/savanna. My impression was 'lasioglossum' but the Bot says Augochlora, and that seems plausible.

A small andrena on Claytonia virginica in a sandy black oak woodland.

Six-spotted Tiger Beetle (Cicindela sexguttata)Observer

What
Ground Crab Spiders (Genus Xysticus)Observer
martinlucasDescription
A medium sized spider in the leaf litter of an oak woodland (formerly a savanna, no doubt). Looks similar to Xysticus funestus, but I haven't studied it carefully yet.

On Fragaria virginica in a sandy old field planted in hardwoods ~ 20 years ago. A small, rather shiny bee with little white blazes on its abdomen.

What
Phlegra hentziObserver
martinlucasDescription
A small spider scampering quite athletically over oak leaves in a sandy old field being reforested. It seems quite distinctive, so I'm suggesting this ID, but it's a new one to me.

What
Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus)Observer
martinlucasDescription
In the 'soft landing' zone beneath a big black oak in my front lawn. I was surprised to see one in (late) April.
What
Common Earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris)Observer
martinlucasDescription
I noticed this worm moving in shallow water in a vernal wetland -- heavy rain the night before so the water was rising. I don't see these too often in the Bogus Run Project study area, probably because the xeric sand the is prevalent there isn't that conducive. ID is preliminary -- it looks like a 'nightcrawler's to me. I'd say it was about 22 cm.
What
Woodsy Thyme-Moss (Plagiomnium cuspidatum)Observer
martinlucasDescription
A moss or moss-like plant growing on a rotting stump in a wooded vernal swamp. Quite small.
What
Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus)Observer

A smallish frog in shallow water in a wooded vernal pool - after a night of heavy rain.

What
Scalycaps (Genus Pholiota)Observer
martinlucasDescription
Slimy yellow mushrooms growing from the bottom of a rotting log in low woods.
What
Juniper-apple Rust (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae)Observer
martinlucasDescription
Quite a number of these on a wild juniper in a reforestation area. Heavy rain the night before this photo.

What
Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)Observer
martinlucasDescription
Though common a few miles away, wild Cornus florida bushes are quite scarce in the Bogus Run project area. Those few that are present are in mesic black sand woodlands. This was a small shrub but the flowers were rather large. The photo was processed to make it just a bit easier to see the dogwood - a white pine plantation is in the background.
