One of a few crane flies seen at Gasworks Park on the warmest day so far this year. Seemed reluctant to fly; it also crawled onto my companion's leg.

What
Audouin's Night-stalking Tiger Beetle (Omus audouini)Observer
meeraleeDescription
Seen underneath a large piece of bark. This is the first tiger beetle of any species I've seen in such a wet, forested habitat and on a chilly day it did not speed away nearly as quickly as I would have expected.
What
Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium)Observer
meeraleeDescription
Oregon grape is blooming all over Seward Park at the moment. The yellow blossoms are always so surprising to me; they don't seem to match the austerity of the leaves.

What
Norway Spruce (Picea abies)Observer
meeraleeDescription
I first noticed the deep pink/red cones on this tree; there were also larger mature brown cones on the ground, with a texture like armadillo skin. Not a native conifer but lovely to see.
What
Genus CepaeaObserver
meeraleeDescription
Seen in the middle of the sidewalk after a night of heavy rain. Moved it to a patch of soil off the concrete so it wouldn't get crunched underfoot.
What
Coyote (Canis latrans)Observer
meeraleeDescription
Seen directly on the trail in Gingko Petrified Forest State Park in Eastern Washington. Seemed hours or days old, not fresh but not ancient either. Possibly from a rabbit meal?
What
Black Slug (Arion ater)Observer
meeraleeDescription
Seemed to be actively feeding on a mushroom—Amanita species?— on the forest floor.
