What
Western Pearlshell (Margaritifera falcata)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
Found in creek bed after high water had receded. Have not previously seen mussels in Pedee Creek, but maybe that’s because I wasn’t looking for them. :-)

What
Flies (Order Diptera)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
This was creek side. It was very interested in tasting the fabric of my work pants and T-shirt. Doesn’t show in the photo, but it had a blunt proboscis that it had to drop its head/raise its butt slightly to use.
What
Yellow-spotted Millipede (Harpaphe haydeniana)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
On the bark of a standing Douglas-fir.
There are actually two millipedes in the photo—apparently in flagrante delicto. :-)

What
American Elm (Ulmus americana)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
Coppiced from tree that was mature in the 1920s, just south of the foundation of the old Hoskins Schoolhouse. First elm I’ve ever seen!
What
Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
Terrible photo, but the best I could do. Raptor beak and head, massive size, light-colored legs (also massive), and chirping cries.

What
Common Privet (Ligustrum vulgare)Observer
michaelheggenDescription
May be a cultivated plant. We have only found it in one location on the farm: close to the farmhouse, where it had formed a nearly impenetrable thicket.
