I don’t know what happened to the hairs, but the moth seemed to change hair color on the tufts and lose almost all his white hairs when he went prepupal without molting. I swear it’s the same caterpillar!

Description

Couldn't find any info about what kind of pupation habits this species had, but Caterpillars of Eastern North America by Wagner mentions that he found a different species had chewed up a hole in the cedar siding of his house, so I put a piece of pine bark in the enclosure with the caterpillar. Sure enough, he began chewing the wood and made a wood pulp "cup" attached to a leaf, and then made a cocoon from his hairs and some more wood pulp. Very well camouflaged!

Non-gif image shows the pre-pupal caterpillar after he had ESCAPED from the enclosure and I found him ON MY CEILING! I put him back in the enclosure, put him on the wood, TAPED IT SHUT, and then he started on his cocoon.

Bees are using the extinct polistes nest! Last year they were trying to use it while it was still active, too. I've seen the bees but haven't had a good look at them. They looked surprisingly wasp-like, not like the bees who prefer the mud dauber nests.
