My neighbor gave me this plant which is native in South Africa. Note the unopened blossom in the second photo. It's a member of the Apocynaceae family as is spreading dogbane, a plant found in the Sierra Nevada.

We saw almost a dozen herds of feral donkeys on our trip on a day trip of dirt roads in this part of Nevada. They ranged in size from three (I guess not a herd) to this which had nine members. All of them were black except the single odd gray one in this group. They have adapted well to this environment as have feral horses that are also found in the area.
