What

Taylor's Flapwort (Mylia taylorii)

Observer

skoksvalley

Date

February 11, 2012

Description

I thought this was Hookeria lucens, but at lab I found oil bodies and trigones. It is a liverwort. There are rhizomes along the ventral side. I can't see any underleaves.

After looking at another book and reviewing keys, this fits... Yea.

Found in area with conifer/hardwood cover. This was a very wet area, with many moss/liverwort species. The cells on the leaves are visible with an eye piece. It was a small patch.
I am not positive that I have id correct until lab time.

It resembles some of the Porella species, but has a very distinctive red tip. It has a fleshy texture. This was growing next to several moss species including:Racomitrium and Hylocomium.

I found this on the trunk of a large Big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum. At first I thought it was Porella navicularis, but it has a different texture. It is 'fleshy" in appearance.

I was able to get a picture of elators and spores.

Sphagnum Mosses (Genus Sphagnum)

Observer

skoksvalley

Date

Description

This sample was gathered in a peat bog located on Skokomish tribal lands. A dear friend who is a tribal member graciously volunteered to take me there. I walked across this area, it was very spongy and wet.The area has several cedar trees (Thuja plicata) and a large population of Labrador tea. Native Americans use this for a traditional medicinal tea, called swamp tea. It is very high in vitamin C.

the capitulum located at the apex of the stem (resembles a flower head)

branches occur in bunches located on the stem (It looks like there are 4). The number of branches in the bunch (4 or 5) is one of the ways to id.

leaves very small (will update description after lab time).
