Much thicker and whier stipe the G. ferruginosus with a more even coloured and less textured orange brown cap with distintive yellow stitching pattern near cap edge.

Under Nothofagus Kamahi and Rimu

Distinguishable from Gymnopilus allantopus by a darker red or yellow stipe and darker rougher cap. Usually much smaller than G.allantopus.

In proximity of a known colony

Emerging fruit can look similar to Thaxterogaster submagellanicus but are more fibrous, usually with a thicker stipe and lacking the distinctive bright ring around the edge of the cap.
