Description

Several holes with short turrets in an upland sand/pebble dune area far from moisture (lakeshore about 1/3 or more mile away). Looked consistent with tiger beetle size/shape but perhaps other organisms make similar holes? Seemed inconsistent with oblique lined habitat....

Overall very few were out. Walking the shoreline I only saw a handful - a few here or there but they were pretty much not out yet except for this one patch. It was kinda crazy. That's where they all were clustered!!

Movement caught my eye to see these two rolling around. The male had mounted the female and she was NOT pleased. Kept rolling over trying to dislodge him. Her legs look folded back like trying to get him off. They ended (lead photo) with this face to face glare...

They are in Mono County! Not surprising, as Fish Slough is in on the northern edge of the Owen's Valley bottom. Not quite as vibrant as one's I saw last year at Owen's Lake (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/12094908, https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/12094861) but still very green. In fairly dry uplands, saw 6-8 walking <1/4 mi. This hole with a very, very short turret (~2mm) looks to be a larval burrow from these guys

Got ID confirmation it's funeral DW by Ken Davenport (https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/1202724) who has observed them in Bishop area before.

I was tripped up by this one! Thought this was SSHA and posted it as such by tiny looking square-looking head and short bill projection, and thought that the tail rounding effect was by asymmetric molt or some other artifact..... But, thanks to the iNat community I think they're right - it's a Coop. Probably a little male.
