What

Insects (Class Insecta)

Description

I woke up after a slightly rainy night of hammock camping and looked out on the drop cloth (not weather proofed) I was using as a carpet and it was crawling with these small white larvae. I've traveled across some states with this set up and was worried that they had hatched from eggs my drop cloth had picked up due to dampness, but then my friends realized they were all over their roof cloths too, so we're suspecting they rained down from the trees

Description

A short tough tree with squat habit and strong "If you park here, I will definitely scratch your paint" branches. Rough peely bark, lots of little red autumn fruits that look somewhere between cherries and rose hips and are rock hard.

Description

Pretty sure I've seen a plant like this before, but never with such deep red flowers.
Hard time see in this picture (I was walking a dog who wasn't as interested in plant photography as me), but I'm like 80% sure it has 5 petals

What

Common House Spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum)

Observer

tadrisa

Date

November 5, 2018 11:10 AM PST

Description

Spider roommate (also in an observation posted October 23rd) was showing off her belly today, reassuring me that she is in fact not Latrodectus. She stays in one spot by the doorway (hidden by the door when it's left open) and seems to eat larger more wandering spiders. Which also seems to fit Parasteatoda's described tendencies

What

Brittlegills (Genus Russula)

Observer

Description

I noticed these after I ran over them with a wagon. I'm leaning towards iNat's suggestion of Russula cerolens. It was sticky in the center. There were a couple of clusters that popped up in the lawn near (but not directly under) a conifer tree in the corner.

Description

A green blob? Kinda pupa-y, but could move a bit, but had no apparent legs. I rolled it a little to see if it was a critter or just a dropped leaf bud and it got some debris stuck to it. I'm not sure if one piece of debris punctured it and caused it to bleed or if it was just emitting a defensive liquid

Live Oak Metria Moth (Metria amella)

Observer

Date

Description

A large (longer than 2 inches) bark colored caterpillar that somehow found its way onto my belly. I was laying in bed staring at my phone when something started tickling my hand, I look down to see this giant caterpillar cruising towards my face. After I got it out to the railing, we had a nice little photoshoot.
