Description

What is this? In mid-October I found willows (Salix sp.) in the meadows along Green Creek in Mono County, CA (elev. 7900 feet) with many of their apical leaves pulled together, not spreading as usual. Peeling the leaves apart I found these tiny insects, each barely 1 mm long, hiding inside. I was thinking aphids, but I see no cornicles.

What

Dwarf Cottonrose Logfia depressa

Observer

Date

Description

ID uncertain. Not very familiar with Logfia and allies, but this seems to key to L. depressa. But according to Jepson eFlora, this location would be too high and too far north for that. Habitat is bottom and margins of dried-up seasonal oxbow pools in Tuolumne Meadows. Plants are dry and shattered (mid-October), but the fruits have lots of pappus bristles, the receptacle margins appear to have persistent spreading phyllary-like chaff scales, the receptacle surface is rough, and the plants are diminutive, nearly stemless. Other suggestions?
