Variable Darner (Aeshna interrupta)Observer
toddfolsomDescription
Aeshna interrupta; Teslin, Yukon; I found this specimen dead on the gravel of a roadside rest area near Teslin Lake. It was probably hit by a vehicle and fell off when that vehicle stopped at the rest area. I keyed this one out at home about 10 days later, so much of the coloration had faded. I used the key in Westfall, et al., with help from Paulson's "Dragonflies... of the West" to eliminate species that were out of range . altho I'm relatively confident of A. interrupta, iNaturalist's suggestions engine came up with that species!
The photomicrographs of key characters are: anal loop of the hindwing, eyes and occiput, genital pocket and genital pocket opened up, spots on dorsum of seg 10, mesepimeral stripe, metepimeral stripe.
