Description

Flower has regular symmetry, with more than 7 petals. Wildflower. Leaves are alternately arranged along stem and are lobed and toothed. Stem was not round and had vertical veins running from base to flowers. Found near open canopy trail in Cascade Valley Metro Park.

Description

Leaves alternately arranged upon stem. Leaves are simple, toothed and slightly lobed. Leaves resemble more toothed, less lobed red maple leaves. Seed clusters dangling throughout tree canopy. Bark is gray towards base and prominently white and flaking towards top, giving tree a bare appearance. Large trunks bent downwards. Found in Cascade Valley Metro Park alongside Cuyahoga river.

Description

Leaves alternate. Leaves are simple and toothed. Leaf is toothed throughout and tapers towards tip. Leaf was glossy with a long stem. Bark of tree is very prominent and white. Bark is paper-like to the touch. Found at the base of a small hill at Cascade Valley Metro Park, in a wooded area about 100 m from a wetland. This area was formerly a golf course.

Leaves alternate. Simple leaves, some of which are severely lobed. Lobes either make leaf "mitten" shaped or have a central large lobe with 2 equally sized smaller lobes on each side. Leaves emit sweet smell when crushed. Found atop small, wooded mound in Cascade Valley Metro Park.

Leaves alternate. Simple leaves which are lobed. Lobes are dull and throughout leaf, with leaf tapering towards base. Bark has smoother, white patches towards bottom and rough shingle like formations towards top. Tree was in dense wooded area, about 50 m from wetland habitat.

End of stem growing large flowering upright bud. Bud about 4-5 inches. Stems were red in color. Tree was small and more shrublike. Growing on edge of thicket near parking lot.

Description

About 1 meter tall, dry, currently non-flowering plant. Side stems grew opposite in pairs. One flowering/ seed dispersing head per stem, including main stem. Stems were covered in small thorns. Heads were completely covered in thorns, which became larger on tip of flowering head. Largest thorns approximately 1 inch. Basal thorns on flowering head curved and surrounded head nearly to top. These thorns were approximately 3-4 inches. Growing on edge of grassland near road.
