dkavanaugh Curator

Curator Emeritus at the California Academy of Sciences, research specialty Carabidae

I'm interested in carabid beetles on a worldwide basis. However, my special interest is with animals living at high elevations and high latitudes, their adaptations to life in such places, their habitat and geographical distributions, their genealogical relationships, and their evolutionary history. More and more, I'm concerned with the impacts of global and regional warming on these organisms. I've worked most extensively in the mountains of western North America, but also in mountaineous regions of Europe (Alps), Asia (China and southern Siberia), Papua New Guinea, Madagascar and elsewhere.
