Instructor in biology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Did a PhD in eco/evo bio at Florida State, broadly studying changes in the trait distributions and ecology of bony fish populations under harvest and environmental change. I worked with models, museum specimens, and experimental mesocosms, the last of these using Heterandria formosa as a model organism. I have an M.S. in STEM Teaching and am super interested in how to use iNat in a college classroom setting! My academic site: sites.google.com/view/mschumm
I grew up and went to college in Chicago and moved to Tallahassee in 2019 for grad school, and mostly got into using iNat down in Florida during 2020 and the start of COVID. While an ecologist/evolutionary biologist by training, I am deffo not a systematist or experienced field ecologist and my ID abilities are pretty limited and mostly a product of what taxa I see fairly regularly (FWIW, I can definitely help you with any questions about whether or not a fish you found is H. formosa!). I probably most enjoy making observations of birds, which were sort of my first animal group I got interested in growing up, but mostly my observations are just what I take on my iPhone camera as I go about my day so in large part it's also arthropods (and, when I lived in Florida, herps).
