This is the programmatic account of the Virginia Natural Heritage Program (VNHP) at the Department of Conservation and Recreation. It is currently monitored by Megan Sebasky (@uniflora, [email protected]). The VNHP’s work focuses on science-based conservation to protect Virginia's native plant and animal life and the ecosystems upon which they depend, which requires knowledge of the location of these resources. Our biologists are limited in the areas they can visit each field season, so iNaturalist observations will enhance VNHP's work in the protection of natural heritage resources within the Commonwealth and inform species' range-wide conservation. Shared natural heritage resource information will help VNHP scientists make timely conservation decisions. iNaturalist automatically obscures coordinates for taxa that are threatened, and users may opt to obscure coordinates for privacy reasons. Please consider sharing your obscured coordinates with this account in Relationship settings (https://www.inaturalist.org/users/edit#relationships) or joining and sharing coordinates with our updated umbrella collection project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/va-nhp-tracked-species. Our occurrence data are treated as sensitive and are only available via subscription under license agreement. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions about our treatment or sharing of sensitive data.
If you would like to provide more information on your sightings to help with our data, consider submitting Rare Species Sighting Forms (https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/rare-species-sighting).
