Flowers are ½ to ¾" across with 10 to 25 pale blue to violet petals and a yellow center that turns reddish with age.

The bracts are short, with dark, diamond-shaped tips.
The leaves are thick, stiff and mostly toward the bottom of the stem. Lower leaves on long, often winged stalked.
