Description

Blanchard’s Cricket Frog (Acris crepitans blanchardi)

15 September 2017
305-309 W. Quail Run
Rockwall, Rockwall County, Texas

Blanchard's Cricket Frogs were literally all over the edge of the pond at the site with one having to be careful when stepping not to step on the new generation of the species. We were treated during our stay at the pond to a sonorous chorous of the mature cricket frogs all around the pond with their collective song starting off to one side with one then two then three joining in until the sound picked up and was actually audibly loud and hundreds of the frogs sang in unison. They almost sounded like the large shorebirds at first, with a throaty, raucous and nearly cackling song that became quite melodious once everyone else at the pond joined in. There well may be plenty of snakes at the pond with so many frogs in the vicinity. With such a plentiful food source in the immediate area be sure to watch your step.
