Bird was foraging for insects on the ground. You can see a bit of red on the nape of its neck in the third photo.
I apologize for the crappy photos, but this was a northern flicker, yellow-shafted! The bird is mostly in the center of the photos, if not to the left a little. I have video proof as it took flight - slower it down and saw the gold feathers - the last photo is a screenshot from that video, taken the moment the bird takes flight.
