Description

My son originally spotted these. He was leading our party when these owls were accidentally flushed from their roosting site very near this obviously seldom travelled trail. They stayed in the area for a few more minutes (as far as we could tell) and we got some good views. They were spooked by the smallest movements and would fly away to a new perch. The attached photo is the best I got (dim lighting, cell phone pic). Unfortunately many of the key diagnostic characteristics are obscured. Facial markings were characteristic of Long-eared Owl: vertical white lines between eyes, orange coloration on outside of facial disk, and dark brown/black markings around eyes. The breast had vertical striping and the body was smaller and long and thin compared to GHOW. We were in a part of the forest mostly dominated by Doug fir and with some redwoods, maybe a couple of hundred feet above the creek. There is good open grassland foraging habitat surrounding these woods.
