What

Oat Crown Rust (Puccinia coronata var. avenae)

Observer

Date

Description

Telial stage present. Rust and smut co-infecting same plants.
Strictly probably Puccinia coronata var. avenae f.sp. graminicola.

In my opinion it isn't really possible to identify the orange stage (uredinia) on grasses as P. coronata. It requires the presence of the dark brown telial stage and confirmation of the characteristic 'crown' of the telial stage. Without that it's just a best guess (i.e. most/all current iNat records). Avena (fatua and others) supports multiple rusts (e.g. P. graminis) and the aecial stage on Rhamnus is now considered to be a different species.
