Copper-bellied Ant (Ochetellus glaber)

Description

In a suburban yard. A large number of ants forming a long trail across the grass, up the trunk, and into the plant canopy to exploit the mass of opened flowers. Those en route back to the nest have noticeably swollen gasters. Flowers also being visited by loud buzzing bumblebees.

The plant is a cultivated rabbiteye blueberry - Vaccinium virgatum cult. ’Takahe’.
