These were near the base of a tree in a red fir-dominated forest with some lodgepole pine. Also near a road and trail (in a campground), so disturbance occurs regularly and soil is somewhat compacted. This is the second time that I've found these weird, mountain-loving mushrooms (see observation MO 76210=iNat 10011249), again in an Abies-dominated forest. Odor was very mild upon collection, but by the day after collection had developed a faint sweet corn smell with a funky back note, but not spermatic as in Inocybe. These really look like no other mushroom, with their chambered, black interior and scanty peridium towards the base.
