Description

There were a large number of holes like this in the bark of this big Eastern Cottonwood tree.

From very low down to high up -- lots and lots of these holes.

Is this caused by a bird? Like a sapsucker?

Or, are they holes cause by something like bark beetles drilling out from underneath the bark?

You can see many of these holes in the second image, and a view of the tree in the third image.
