What

Hill Cane (Arundinaria appalachiana)

Observer

mjpapay

Date

July 2021

Description

Well above the floodplain of the Little Tennessee River, on a mesic south-facing side slope, beneath a canopy of a mixed deciduous forest, accompanied by ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides, Dennstaedtia punctilobula, Aythyrium asplenioides, Asplenium platyneuron, Pteridium aquilinum), and Hypoxis hirsuta.

Also, the floodplain of the Little Tennessee River, downslope of the observation, is devoid of River Cane - although it does occur along the course of the river.

NOTE: Photo added 29 July 2021 of a dwarf/small plant of Arundinaria that was found on the bank of the Little Tennessee River, about 40 feet in elevation below the plants of the initial observation that occur on the upper section of the side-slope of the hill/ridge. The plants of the side-slope and the plant of the floodplain/riverbank are consistent in all morphological traits.
