Description

The big old tree behind the old Eucla Telegraph Station. Historically significant perhaps, as Tuart is not native to the Eucla area, but only occurs naturally on the Swan Coastal Plain near Perth. So this tree was probably planted by early telegraph station workers many years ago. There is another big old Tuart at the old Eyre telegraph station (Eyre Bird Sanctuary) as well. This single tree has a spread of 50m or more in diameter, forming a dense microhabitat, as the branches touch the ground, are covered by the moving sand dunes and resprout.. Eucalyotus gomphocephala (Tuart) has characteristic young buds with 7 little fingers which mature into ice-cream cone shaped buds, a large flat pedicel, rough box-like grey bark, and glossy green leaves.
