Description

The Pincushion - White Seed Leuco-spermum

Showing the white seed (leuco-spermum) that was named in 1810 - 170 years before the structure was identified as an ant fruit (elaiosome) for seed dispersal.
Many studies showed that the ant-fruit stopped oxygen getting to seeds for germination and had to be removed: in nature the first thing that happens after dispersal is that the ants eat it off.
