What I stood on last night (in my bare feet) - Montagu WCape


Stepped on this poor poppet last night.

Note to self: always put the light on even when the moon is like daylight. Even when it's a bit chilly. In March.

It's got me a bit stumped as to what it is though. When staring into its beady eyes, I thought sand snake. But it's not matching with the pics in the book (Branch 1998). The white eyestripe is not typical of karoo or crossmarked sand snake. But is typical of forkmarked sand snake which apparently doesn't occur here. The pretty blotchy pattern is not reflected in pics of any of the sand snakes, and looks a bit like a spotted house snake. But the eye and head-shape are not house snake. On the other hand it's a baby, so the markings may differ, and I shall go with crossmarked...
