Description

3 down 1 to go

I waited 15 years for this picture.
Here, on the Gekkonidae- (and, indeed Sauria-) -deprived KZN South Coast we only have 4 Gecko species: Cape/Common Dwarf, Tropical House, Pondo Flat and Spotted.
This is the first Pondo Flat I've ever seen.
Totally wrong habitat - not a rock in sight - he was hiding under an ill-fitted irrigation valve cover in a patch of dense forest I peeked under in search of snakes, etc.
I pushed my good fortune, thinking he would placidly sit on the hand as I snapped close-ups of his clawless feet and smooth, unsegmented tail - what there was of it. But no, he took off like a rocket into the leaf-litter! No matter, I had no intention of leaving him in his box for fear of the next human having business with it.
I put the word out to all the south coast "greens" for shots of this and the even more elusive Spotted Gecko (Pachydactylus maculatus), both supposedly "widespread and common". Many kind souls have sent me pictures - every last one so far a dark-phase Tropical House Gecko (Hemidactylus mabouia), with tail tubercles and claws agleaming!
How many more years for another? Not to mention the Spotty!
