While turning around a loop in the park trail while watching birds I heard the distinctive sound of a rattlesnake. A few feet in front of me a western diamondback rattlesnake was crossing a bare patch of sand. It coiled at the base of a tamarisk tree and I got quite a few good photos. Note the banding pattern on the tail just before the rattle.
